How does paying extra change an installment loan?

Extra principal payments can reduce the remaining balance earlier and therefore reduce future interest on a typical amortizing loan. The size of the savings depends on the interest rate, the amount of extra payment, and the lender’s payment-allocation and prepayment policies. Use the chart and table above to compare scenarios.

KNOW THE NUMBERS

How installment loan payments and amortization work

What affects the monthly payment?

The amount borrowed, APR and number of installments determine the standard principal-and-interest payment. Fees may increase the actual total cost.

Why do longer terms change the cost?

Spreading repayment over more months generally lowers the monthly payment but increases total interest when the APR and principal stay the same.

Does this calculator check loan eligibility?

No. It performs a math calculation only. No personal information is collected here and no estimated rate is a loan offer.

Calculation: for principal P, monthly rate r = APR ÷ 12, and n monthly installments, payment = P × r ÷ [1 − (1 + r)−n]. At 0% APR, payment = P ÷ n.
